Cabrillo Beach is one of my favorite spots in Los Angeles for a beach bonfire as it tends to be lesser known and stays fairly quiet. There are actually two beaches at Cabrillo Beach, the “inner” and “outer” beaches. The outer beach is closer to the harbor and has a children’s playground on it. The inner beach is closer to the peninsula and is where the fire pits are located.
DO NOT go swimming on the outer beach, it’s best to enjoy that side for the sand, park, and picnic tables. The inner beach is protected from pollution and makes for a much better place to swim, snorkel, and (when the conditions are right), surf.
Cabrillo Beach offers affordable parking in a big lot near both beaches. Plus, there is the free Cabrillo Beach Aquarium where you can wander through the exhibits and learn more about California ocean life, touch the sea stars and urchins, watch the octopus play with its toys, observe endangered Giant Black Seabass, and see the baby animals in the nursery.
One thing to note is that while the daytime and early evenings attract a lot of families, sometimes there can be a more unruly crowd later at night.
