Cork is known as being one of the safer European cities and it’s typically very safe to be out at night, even fairly late and alone as a female.
I traveled by myself to Cork when I was in university and had a great time, never felt unsafe, and was able to walk at night without worrying. It always felt like a good time in the heart of Cork City.

This is where I stayed during my first solo trip to Cork (actually my first solo trip EVER too!), and I liked it a lot! The facilities were clean, the location was within perfect walking distance to everywhere I wanted to go, and I loved the bar downstairs for meeting other travelers.
Mid-Range: Maldron Hotel South Mall Cork City
This 4-star hotel is decently priced and has all the amenities you might need to be comfortable staying in Cork including a bar/restaurant on-site, breakfast available, a business center, and more. The location is great, situated right near the City Center and Victorian Quarter along the river.
High-End: Hayfield Manor
A gorgeous luxury hotel with two restaurants located just outside the City Centre. There is a pool, gym, breakfast, spa, and sauna center. The rooms are beautifully designed and the staff is attentive and friendly.

From Cork Airport:
If you’re flying into Cork Airport, it’s about a 15-minute drive to the city center. There’s no uber in Ireland, so you can take a taxi from the airport upon arrival, or book your airport transfer ahead of time.
It’s best to book your airport transfer in advance so it’s waiting for you upon arrival to avoid the hassle of finding a car after a long day of traveling.
From Dublin Airport:
The Dublin airport is about a 2-hour 45-minute drive away from Cork’s city center. If you’re not renting a car at the airport and driving yourself, it’s best to book an airport transfer in advance.
From Dublin airport to Cork, THIS is the best option for car hire. You will have a personal driver service to take you from the airport directly to the door of your destination.
Do You Need to Rent a Car in Cork?
If you’re staying within Cork and the big cities in Ireland, you will likely be fine without renting a car. You can take public buses between major cities or hire a car. Within the cities, it’s usually easy to get around by foot or public transportation.
I do recommend renting a car if you want to explore the more rural parts of Ireland and more of the scenery in between cities. Or, if you want to move quickly and have more flexibility rather than waiting on public buses.
