What Is the Gap of Dunloe?

The Gap of Dunloe is a scenic narrow mountain pass about a 15-minute drive from Killarney. It’s popular for gorgeous views, lakes, waterfalls, outdoor adventures, stone bridges, and unique ruins.

The ‘Gap’ is a narrow glacial valley that runs for about 11km (7mi) and separates the Purple Mountain Range which is part of Killarney National Park, from the MacgillyCuddy Reeks.

Within The Gap, there are five lakes (from north to south): Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough connected by the River Loe.

The famous Lakes of Killarney (which are nearby and often part of the tours) are Lough Leane (Lower Lake and the largest), Middle Lake (or Muckross Lake), and Upper Lake. Killarney’s Meeting of the Waters is a convergence point for the three lakes and a beautiful spot where tranquility prevails.
