If you’re looking for a romantic spot to take your date or just want to enjoy a little piece of paradise, stop at one of the viewpoints to admire the city lights.

Secret Spots on the Palos Verdes Peninsula

11. Palos Verdes Cove

This is a spot that I just recently found out about, and I have no idea how I’ve never heard of it after all my years of living in Torrance!

Palos Verdes Cove is a gorgeous, hidden surf spot right off the cliffs. To get there, start at the PV Beach Hiking Trailhead off of Paseo Del Mar, and walk down the bluffs for about 10 minutes. You will end up in a gorgeous bay with stunning blue waters that feels like a hidden escape.

It’s a rocky beach, which makes it great for tide pooling. Or, you can set up a beach chair on the bluffs and watch the surfers. If you’re a surfer, the spot typically offers gentle, rolling waves (which is NOT common in the South Bay) but a long paddle out. It’s a pretty localized spot, so be especially respectful of the other surfers.

12. Lunada Bay

For an even more localized surf spot that is a hidden gem in Palos Verdes, head to Lunada Bay. It’s an equally as beautiful and secret spot that has a wonderful right-hand point break for surfers. The waves can get especially big here throughout certain times of the year (typically winter swells), reaching up to 20 feet.

The clifftop has exceptional views over the ocean and out to Santa Catalina Island (on a clear day). The best routes down the bluff are across Paseo Del Mar from Oakley Road and Avenida Mirola.

14. Explore the Palos Verdes Shipwreck Trail

The SS Dominator shipwreck is a popular historical site near the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The ship ran against the rocky beach in 1961 due to fog and navigational problems, and today it’s a popular destination for both locals and tourists to view the remains.

The best time to visit the shipwreck is at low tide when the water is at its lowest level and you can reach the ship easily. The trailhead starts off of Paseo Del Mar, depending on where you want to start your descent down the bluffs, the hike can range from 2 to 4 miles round trip. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes, you are mostly walking along the rocks on the beach until you reach the wreck.

15. Have a Picnic at Del Cerro Park

Del Cerro Park sits on top of the bluffs right at the head of the Portuguese Bend Reserve hiking trails. It overlooks the ocean and has beautiful views across the cliffs. The grassy park and picnic tables make for a great place to bring a picnic, and you can wander down the trails if you want to go for a hike.

There is limited parking at Del Cerro, so you may have to park up the street and walk in.

16. Hike Across the Palos Verdes Peninsula

There are many great hiking trails across the whole of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with spectacular views and incredible nature. The Portuguese Bend includes miles of trails such as these most popular ones: Palos Verdes Bluff Trail, Burma Road Trail, and Eagle’s Nest Trail Loop, all have fantastic views and offer stunning imagery. There are trails along Point Vicente Park and around the Terranea Resort as well, many that go down to and along the beach.

However, my personal favorite hike is the McBride Trail which starts at the end of Ocean Terrace Drive. It’s very similar to the Portuguese Bend trails, but far less crowded. There are multiple paths to wander along if you stay to your right that head down the cliff, or if you stay to your left you can walk along the top of the cliff. Either way, they are moderately difficult trails with excellent views.

17. Wander Along the Terranea Discovery Trail in Rancho Palos Verdes

For a more mild walk, try out the 2.2-mile out-and-back Terranea Discovery Trail that runs along the ocean cliffs and down to the beach. It’s a gradual slope from the parking lot that rewards you with beautiful views of the ocean and some scenic stops along the way. Starting from the Terranea Bluff Park the trail ends at Terranea Beach, a small sand and pebble cove.

18. Go Tide Pooling

Tide pools are fascinating to explore. When the tide recedes, it leaves behind small pools of seawater in indentations on the sand or rocks. These pools are home to a variety of marine life, from crabs and urchins to anemones and starfish.

tide pools in PV

There are many places to find tide pools along the rocky Palos Verdes beaches. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day investigating all the different creatures that call the tide pool home. Just be sure to check the tides before you go, and make sure to arrive at low tide to get the most out of your experience!

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park (featuring two beaches – Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove) is one of the best places to spend a day exploring the tide pools. They also have sandy stretches to sit out on and enjoy the sunshine.

19. Spend a Day at One of the Palos Verdes Beaches

Looking for a breathtaking beach day experience in Los Angeles? Along the Palos Verdes Peninsula, you’ll find multiple pristine, secluded beaches just waiting to be explored.

Sacred Cove Beach is ideal for a relaxing day of swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Or, venture over to Rancho PV Beach for a more adventurous day of exploring tide pools and hiking along the cliffs. Another excellent option is Palos Verdes Beach, however, you truly can’t go wrong with picking a great beach to spend time at.

20. Enjoy the Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center

The Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The park offers beautiful panoramic views of the ocean, hiking trails, picnic areas, and a children’s play area. The nature center also features animal exhibits and a variety of educational programs.

21. Take a Drive Around the PV Peninsula

One of the most simple and best ways to experience the beauty in PV is to take a drive along the peninsula using Palos Verdes Dr. This scenic route offers stunning views of the ocean, coastline, and rolling hills.

Along the way, there are several places to stop and enjoy the view, including Vista Point at Calle Entradero. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the stunning scenery and perhaps a picnic to stop and enjoy the views.

No, it’s not.
However, it’s always recommended to have travel insurance any time you travel in case of injury, accident, lost luggage, missed flight, etc. The best and most affordable travel/expat insurance is Safety Wing. It covers some medical as well, which is important in the U.S. due to the high cost of health care.

Spring (March-May) or Fall (September-November) – are cooler and have the potential of rain, but you will beat some of the crowds and see some incredible wildflowers (spring)/greenery (fall).
