If you’re looking for a SoCal beach town that’s got it all, look no further than Redondo Beach. With its award-winning pier, world-class shopping and dining, and miles of sand to explore, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Here are some of the top things to do in Redondo Beach California from a local.

What Is Redondo Beach Known For? Why Visit?

Redondo Beach is a beautiful coastal city located in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, California. The city is known for its landmark pier and King Harbor (Fishermans Wharf) as well as its wide sandy beaches, scenic views, and abundance of outdoor activities.

Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and much more. Redondo Beach’s famous pier features restaurants, shops, and plenty of activities in the harbor. The South Bay area is known for its relaxed, beach lifestyle and for being a fantastic place to live.

Something to note… Redondo Beach is typically talked about and divided into north Redondo (which goes a bit inland behind Hermosa Beach) and south Redondo (which runs along the beach, has the pier, and is bordered by Torrance on the east side).

#1 – Take a Scenic Helicopter Ride Over the South Bay LA

Hands down a helicopter ride over the South Bay will be one of your top experiences in Redondo Beach! There’s nothing quite like a low-level flight over the South Bay area. You’ll have 360-degree views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Torrance Beach, King Harbor, and the beach city piers. If it’s a clear day, you will see all the way out to Catalina Island!

The tour starts at the adorable Torrance Airport, which is always full of old and unique small planes. The South Bay has a character of its own and you will learn plenty about the area while taking in the incredible views.

Whether you’re a local looking for a new way to see the city or a visitor looking for unique things to do, a helicopter tour is a perfect way to see the South Bay.

#2 – Grab Ice Cream at Handel’s

Some of the best things to do in Redondo Beach, in my opinion, are the simplest things such as enjoying the beach and visiting local favorite spots. One of the best local spots is Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Located on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), this is hands down my favorite ice cream shop and it’s even been listed as #1 in the world! It’s a locals’ favorite that always has unique ice cream flavors (my favorite is their oreo-dough) and they usually have discounted scoops on Tuesdays.

PRO TIP: Take your Handel’s ice cream and sit in the parking lot above the beach to enjoy the sunset and beach views.

#3 – Try a Surf Lesson

I’ve been surfing in the South Bay for a few years now, and there’s just nothing like the feeling of catching a wave while watching the LA basin sprawl out in front of you! The South Bay is known for its surf culture (for experienced surfers, head over to El Porto in Manhattan Beach) so a surf lesson is a fun way to try something new and get immersed in local activities.

Redondo Beach is a good spot to try a surf lesson (or practice your skills) because the waves never get too big (typically around 2-3ft is average) and they stay fairly consistent year-round. The water is warmest in the summer, specifically in September and October, but you can surf year-round with a wetsuit.

Even as someone who has been surfing for a few years now, I always take a lesson when I’m at a new spot. Surfing can be a tough (but incredibly rewarding and exhilarating) sport, and it’s best to start with a lesson from a local expert surfer who can cover basic surf etiquette, tide, and wave dynamics, safety, and surf technique.

#4 – See a Show at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center

The Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center is much more than just a place to see a show and is known as “the Crown Jewel of the South Bay arts scene.” With over 40,000 square feet of special event programming areas, it’s a veritable mecca for the arts.

The 1,453-seat theater is the perfect venue for an intimate performance, and the speaker series is second to none. But that’s not all; the ballet, music, and dance performances are top-notch, and the facility is constantly hosting new and exciting events.

#5 – Go for a Happy Hour Drink in the Riviera

The Riviera Village is a walkable section of Redondo Beach between PCH and Esplanade that is full of delicious restaurants, bars, cafes, and boutique shopping. The Riviera is probably my favorite section of Redondo! It’s just up from the beach, so you can always end your time with a quick hop over for the views, and it has that awesome, beachside southern California charm.

For happy hour, my go-to is the Rebel Republic. You can also check out The Hook & Plow, Rockefeller, Kalaveras, or the Riviera House.

#6 – Have Brunch at the Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House is a longtime favorite for brunch-goers in the South Bay in search of a hearty meal. The menu features all the classics, from pancakes and waffles to eggs and even crepes. However, they really shine with their specialty pancakes.

Some of the popular specials include the Dutch Baby, a large German-style pancake that is baked in the oven, or the Bacon Pancake, a delicious savory and sweet breakfast. They also often have new or seasonal specials such as the Pumpkin Pancakes, made with fresh pumpkin puree.

The restaurant is always packed on the weekends, so be sure to arrive early if you don’t want to wait in line. But trust me, it’s worth the wait!

#7 – Grab a Coffee and Go for a Walk Along the Esplanade

For a great way to enjoy the sunny weather and get some exercise, grab a coffee and go for a walk along the Esplanade! The Esplanade runs along the ocean and has a walking path with views of the beach and coastline. You can also head down one of the stairs and walk along the beach path known as the Strand.

There are plenty of great coffee shops to choose from in the Riviera, so you can get your caffeine fix while enjoying the stunning ocean views. Hi-Fi Espresso is one of my new favorites – they serve up some of the best coffee with a fresh, subtle honey flavor.

If you prefer to sit and enjoy your coffee at the cafe first, I recommend either Coffee Cartel or Yellow Vase. And if it’s later in the day and you’re looking more for lunch, head to Turquoise Restaurant.

Coffee Cartel is a cozy, quirky place to enjoy your coffee or tea. It’s a great place to curl up with a good book and they used to host frequent poetry and open mic nights – so with any luck, they will start that back up again soon! Yellow Vase is a bright, cute cafe with great food and friendly staff.

#8 – Go Fishing

If you’re looking for a fun and free activity, go fishing off the Redondo Beach Pier. You don’t need a license to fish from the pier (state law allows for free public fishing from pier structures), which makes it a great activity for the whole family.

There’s no telling what you might catch – halibut, sand bass, barracuda, and white sea bass are all possibilities. Other fish that are commonly caught off the pier include Pacific mackerel, sardines, bonito, perch, jacksmelt, silversides, and croakers.

If you need to rent any equipment, head over to Redondo Beach Sportfishing. They offer rod and reel rentals, tackle, and even boat fishing tours if that’s what you prefer. Plus, they offer FREE fishing advice from their friendly and knowledgeable staff.

#9 – Enjoy the Views and Stop for a Sweet Treat

It’s nice to simply wander along the Redondo Pier and take in the sights over the ocean. See what fish people are catching, watch the boats cruise around the harbor, and maybe do a little shopping or grab a bite to eat.

For a sweet treat, stop at Jade Snow or the World Famous Churros joint. The Redondo Pier connects down to the Marina where you can find fresh seafood or stop for a drink to take in the views.

#10 – Stand-Up Paddleboard in the Marina

Enjoy the sunshine by renting a SUP and paddling around the Marina. Paddle House rents boards right on the water and gives you some quick pointers. On a warm day, it’s fun to hop in the water and swim around too!

Best Redondo Beach Shopping

Some of the best shopping in Redondo Beach can be found at the South Bay Galleria for more commercial and mainstream stores, the Riviera Village for boutiques, and the Redondo Pier for those looking for souvenirs and more touristy items.

#11 – South Bay Galleria

The South Bay Galleria is a large mall in north Redondo that has plenty of stores such as Macy’s, Kohl’s, Target, Q, Wonder of Dinosaurs, and H&M. It also features a 16-screen AMC Theatres multiplex and many restaurants.

#12 – Riviera Village

There are plenty of boutique shops to explore in the Riviera from clothing stores to artwork and home decor. My personal favorite for clothing is Beach DNA. They have an adorable selection of beachy clothes and jewelry.

There is also a Farmers Market on Sundays from 9am to 2pm in the triangle parking lot across from Trader Joe’s. Shop at the market for local fresh produce, prepared goods, and handmade items.

#13 – Redondo Pier

Shopping on the Redondo Pier will be catered more towards tourists. You can find plenty of souvenirs here and merchandise with local logos on them.

#14 – Grab a Margarita at Kalaveras

Located in the Riviera, Kalaveras is a Mexican restaurant with delicious margaritas. The best part? You can order ANY of their signature margaritas in a pitcher! They have a great nighttime ambiance and yummy food and appetizers to snack on.

#15 – Check Out One of the Local Breweries

There are quite a few breweries around Redondo that are worth stopping in for a beer. Redondo Beach Brewing Company is located in the Riviera and serves locally brewed beers. King Harbor Brewing Co. is just down the street. Or, up the road is Rock & Brews which has a fun outdoor patio that is often playing sporting games or hosting events and karaoke nights.

#16 – Have Dinner at the Sea Level Restaurant and Lounge

If you’re looking for a truly unique dining experience and nighttime activity, look no further than the Sea Level Restaurant and Lounge at the Shade Hotel. This award-winning eatery is located on the water’s edge, offering stunning views of the California coast.

The menu features fresh, locally sourced seafood and produce, cooked to perfection. Whether you’re enjoying a romantic dinner for two or a night out with friends, Sea Level is sure to please. Reservations are recommended, so be sure to book early.

#17 – Bring Your Furry Friend to the Redondo Beach Dog Park

Do you have a pup at home who loves to socialize and play? If so, then you’ll want to bring them to the Redondo Beach Dog Park on Flagler Lane. This is the biggest and best dog park in the South Bay, and your furry friend is sure to have a blast.

There are two parks – one for little dogs and one for big dogs – so everyone can enjoy themselves and stay safe. The parks are nice and grassy, and they’re planting trees to add more shade. Bring a ball and tire them out across this huge park!

#18 – Visit the Redondo Beach Historical Museum

Located right next door to the dog park is the Redondo Beach Historical Museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of Redondo Beach artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, school annuals, and historic documents inside a quaint 1904 Queen Anne house.

The museum is only open during limited hours, but it can be nice to simply admire the architecture and gardens from the outside of the property.

#19 – Admire the Art at Jill Sanders Gallery

Peruse the stunning collection of fine artwork and landscape photography at the JS Gallery. It’s a relaxing, yet breathtaking activity, and the owners are incredibly friendly! Located in the Riviera, you can pop in after a meal or drink while out on the town.

#20 – Enjoy the Beach!

Of course, no visit to Redondo would be complete without spending some time hanging out on the beach! You can go for a swim in the ocean, surf or kayak, or just sunbathe on the sand. There are also plenty of beach volleyball courts if you want to get active.

There are parking lots at the pier and towards Torrance Beach at Miramar Park. Or there are plenty of metered spots along Esplanade. There is also often some free parking to be found on the streets running horizontally to the ocean from Knob Hill Ave. to Avenue I.

#21 – Take a Bike Ride Along the Strand

There are plenty of places around Redondo Beach to rent a bike (or roller skates!) and go for a ride along the Strand.

The Strand is a 22-mile bike path that runs along the ocean, starting at Torrance Beach (at the base of the Peninsula) and stretching north up to Santa Monica. It hits all of LA’s most popular beaches along the way, including all of the South Bay beaches.

Some of the best rentals include Beachside Bike & E-Bike Rentals or MB E-Bike Rentals, both located on Catalina Ave. And for a real challenge, pack a lunch and try to make it all the way up to Santa Monica and back!

#22 – Try Your Luck With Some Whale Watching

Looking for an exciting way to spend a few hours? Why not take a whale-watching cruise? Departing year-round from Redondo Beach Sportfishing & Whale Watching (located at the pier), the boat offers both inside and outside seating. The boat serves wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee, tea, and snacks as you enjoy the scenery.

The 2.5-hour Whale Watch trips have a high whale-sighting success rate, so you’re likely to spot the magnificent Gray Whales as well as Fin, Minke, Humpbacks, and Sperm whales. In addition to whales, you’ll also see other wildlife including sharks, dolphins, seals, sea lions, and more. It’s an unforgettable experience that you’re sure to enjoy!

#23 – Go Sailing

Spend a day out on the ocean in a sailboat! South Bay Sailing offers a variety of sailing experiences to suit any skill level.

If you’re a beginner, their lessons are the perfect way to get started. You’ll learn all the basics, from hoisting the sails to steering the boat. And if you’re looking for a refresher course, their experienced instructors can help you brush up on your skills.

If you just want to sit back and relax, charter one of their boats for a half-day or full-day trip. You’ll have a blast cruising around the bay with an experienced skipper at the helm.

#25 – Spend the Day at Seaside Lagoon

Looking for a fun-filled summer day with the kids? Then head to Seaside Lagoon, a large saltwater lagoon perfect for swimming, open during the summer months.

In addition to the lagoon, there’s also a sandy beach, snack bar, volleyball courts, and a play area, making it the perfect spot for a family outing. So come on down and enjoy a day by the water – you’re sure to have a blast!

 

#26 – Play at the Alondra Park Splash Pad

Alondra Park is the largest park closest to the ocean and the beach cities and a great place to cool off on a hot day. The Splash Pad is a great place for kids to play and get wet, with a kid-friendly fountain. There are also plenty of swings and climbing equipment to keep them entertained.

In the summer, the pool operates from mid-June to the end of August, and the Splash Pad is open from the beginning of May until the end of September. The park itself is open year-round, so there’s always something to do from skate parks and fishing lakes to baseball fields and community events and activities.

#27 – Enjoy the Sunshine at the Veterans Park

Veterans Park is located at the corner of South Catalina Avenue and Torrance Boulevard and is a great place to take the kids. There’s plenty of green space to run around in, and the playground has enough equipment to keep them busy for hours.

Plus, the memorial provides a nice reminder and teaching moment for the kids of the sacrifices made by our local veterans. And the view from the park is simply breathtaking! You can see for miles out over the ocean. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some time with your family.

#28 – Explore Hopkins Wilderness Park

Hopkins Wilderness Park is the perfect place to explore the great outdoors with the family. The park features a forest, meadows, and a pond, as well as an outdoor amphitheater and picnic areas.

The trails are perfect for hiking or biking, and you’re sure to see some local wildlife along the way. Overnight camping is allowed with reservations made in advance.

#29 – Eat at Joe’s

Eat at Joe’s has been a South Bay landmark since 1968. This American diner has been serving a menu of classics and specials to the Redondo community for years now. The diner is especially popular for its burgers, hot dogs, and specials such as the Mad Dog, which is made up of yesterday’s leftovers.

Eat at Joe’s has a casual and friendly atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind with family and friends. Joe’s is conveniently located across the street from the library so you can take your kids over to pick out a good book after or enjoy the kids’ activities often offered in the summer months.

Weather + Best Time of Year to Visit

The temperature rear round typically varies from 55°F to 75°F and is rarely below 45°F or above 83°F. This makes Redondo Beach an ideal destination for those who enjoy mild weather year-round and want a beach town with many great things to do.

The best time of year to visit Redondo Beach is from August to October when kids are returning to school and the crowds start to thin a bit. This is also when you will get some of the best (warmest and sunniest) weather.

Best Way to Get Around Redondo Beach

The easiest ways to get around Redondo Beach are to drive, walk or bike, and Uber. If you are staying by the beach you could probably pretty easily walk or bike to explore the harbor, pier, beach, and the Riviera Village.

However, if you want to explore other parts of the South Bay, everything is spread out just enough that driving (or taking an Uber) is more convenient. Plus, if you want to leave the South Bay to explore the rest of the LA and OC areas, it will be best to have a car.

Redondo Beach has plenty of special events happening year-round that are definitely worth checking out. The BeachLife Festival is a particularly popular annual event that happens in May at the Seaside Lagoon. The 2023 lineup included Gwen Stefani, The Black Keys, and Iration. It’s a great weekend full of music and celebrating beach culture!

The Kite Festival is also a hit with the skies above the pier filled with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes. Or, join in the annual Fourth of July 5k Run in the Riviera Village.

The Summer Live Music Concerts are another great option for music lovers, with a different band playing every week. And for those who really want to get into the Halloween spirit, the Rocktober Festival is a must-attend event.

Of course, if you’re visiting southern California, you will want to spend a day in LA and exploring Hollywood. There is plenty to see from hiking to the Hollywood sign, seeing the stars on the Walk of Fame, taking a studio tour, or enjoying the quirky atmosphere at Venice and Santa Monica beaches.

Located just off the coast and a short ferry ride from Long Beach is the gorgeous Catalina Island. One of the best day trips, there is so much to do from incredible snorkeling, scuba diving, and hiking to going zip lining or enjoying a wonderful dinner and drink at the Descanso Beach Club.

The town itself is very popular, but it has managed to retain its charm and allure. Many of the town’s beaches, shops, and restaurants are found along Crescent Ave. Plus, Avalon has three public beaches, each with its own unique character.

Which Beach Is Better Hermosa or Redondo?

Hermosa and Redondo beaches are both great in their own ways, and it really depends on what you’re looking for as to which one is better.

Hermosa Pier has better nightlife and is full of restaurants and bars, while Redondo Beach has a bit more to offer in terms of variety and is better for families.

However, both beaches are great for swimming, sunbathing, and simply relaxing by the water. So whether you’re looking for a lively night out or a quiet day by the sea, you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for at Hermosa or Redondo beach.

Is Redondo Beach Wealthy?

Generally speaking, yes Redondo Beach is a wealthy place. As far as California beach cities go, it’s possible to find accommodation (both hotels and places for rent) on the more affordable end.

Out of the South Bay beach cities, Redondo tends to be the least showy with wealth and has a more “chill” vibe to it. However, it’s still a beach city in Los Angeles County and thus it will be more expensive in comparison to the rest of the U.S.
