When it comes to deciding on a place to live, or even just vacation, there are a lot of factors to consider. But two states that often come up in debates are Colorado vs. California. So, which one is better? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each state and see where they rank in terms of livability and travel-friendliness.

How Does Colorado Compare to California?

NOTE: I grew up and have lived my whole life in California. My dad grew up in Colorado, so his side of the family still lives there. I have spent a lot of time in Colorado and have even lived there for a few months. As such, it’s easy for me to compare these two fantastic states!

California and Colorado are two of the most popular states in the US. Both states offer a wealth of natural beauty, great weather, and plenty of outdoor activities. However, there are some key differences between the two states.

For example, Colorado is much more mountainous than California, and it also has a drier climate. California has an expansive coast that offers plenty of ocean activities. As a result, winter sports are much more popular in Colorado than in California whereas beach and ocean sports are more of a draw for people heading to California.

There are a few key differences in the type of people living in each state as well as the opportunities available for those looking to live in one of these states or to travel to them. Overall, both states offer a lot to visitors and residents alike, but they have distinct qualities that set them apart from each other.

Is Denver Like Los Angeles?

While Denver and Los Angeles are two of the most populous cities in the United States and both are located in the western part of the country, that’s about where the similarities end.

For one thing, Los Angeles is located right on the Pacific Ocean, and as such, beach culture is much more vibrant. In addition, Denver has a more relaxed atmosphere than Los Angeles. LA tends to draw a more highly competitive person and those who enjoy a ritzy lifestyle with its access to Hollywood and many high-income neighborhoods.

It can snow in Denver while it’s always around 70°F in Los Angeles. Both have access to mountains though it’s a farther drive and not nearly as impressive from LA.

While both cities are vibrant and exciting places to live, Denver may be a better choice for those looking for a slower pace of life.

Colorado vs. California

Weather

When it comes to weather, California and Colorado are two very different states. California is known for its temperate climate, with warm days and cool nights practically year-round. Though California is so large that it has many different climates from the desert to the highlands and the coast depending on what region you’re in.

In contrast, Colorado’s weather is a bit more standard across the state and experiences hot summers and cold winters. Both states have similar amounts of precipitation; California typically gets most of its rain in the winter and spring months, while Colorado experiences the majority of its rainfall in the spring and summer.

Colorado gets snow in the winter pretty much over the whole state and especially in the mountain towns. However, it’s not nearly as cold and frigidly windy as other states in the U.S. California does actually get snow in some areas such as the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges and Big Bear Lake.

Mountains & Beach

Colorado is known for the mountains and California is known for the beach. However, California has both mountains and beaches, meaning you could surf in the morning and hit the ski slopes in the afternoon!

Both have gorgeous nature and scenery, the difference is that people in Colorado seem to identify with and enjoy the mountains more than people in California. California’s mountainous regions are not often highlighted or as frequently thought of when considering visiting or living there, but they are still pretty incredible!

For comparison… Colorado’s highest peak is Mount Elbert in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains at 14,439 ft. California’s highest peak is Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevadas at 14,505 ft.

So, to say Colorado has better mountains is not necessarily a fair assumption… they are just slightly different and incredible for different reasons.

Colorado’s mountains are said to be more accessible, they’re closer to Denver and other popular tourist areas. Whereas California’s challenging hiking routes tend to be steeper and take much longer to complete. California’s mountain ranges offer a wider diversity of rock formations and unique summit views.

California does, clearly, take the cake when it comes to ocean beaches as Colorado is located entirely inland. If you are a beach person, there is clearly only one right answer for where to go!

Culture

Though both California and Colorado are located in the western region of the United States, the two states have fairly different cultures. One major reason is the difference in climate which leads to differences in lifestyle as well. For example, Californians are more likely to spend time outdoors all year round, while Coloradans tend to be more indoors during the winter months unless they are skiers or snowboarders.

Another cultural difference between the two states is the population density. California is one of the most populous states in the country, while Colorado is relatively less crowded. Californians are more likely to be of Hispanic or Asian descent, while Coloradans are more likely to be of European descent. Despite these differences, both California and Colorado offer a unique and vibrant western experience.

In California, you will find a range of different people from big tech and hippies in the north to celebrities and hustlers in the south and everything in between. In both states, you will find very adventurous and outdoorsy people as well as very “normal” hardworking people. However, Colorado tends to draw more down-to-earth people, whereas if you’re looking for fame and that big business hustle culture, you might find more opportunities in California.

Are CO and CA Friendly States?

Although they have different cultures and climates, they are both friendly states. Colorado is known for its outdoor recreation, and it’s a great place to meet new people with many welcoming and friendly faces.

California is also a friendly state, welcoming people from all walks of life. The state is home to a diverse population and a liberal stance. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for a friendly place to vacation.

Both states tend to lean democratic but have large and passionate populations of Republicans as well, especially in the more rural or wealthy areas.

Leisure & Entertainment

When it comes to leisure and entertainment, Colorado and California are two very different states. In Colorado, outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and camping are popular, while California is known for its beaches, theme parks, and urban nightlife. However, both states offer a wide range of options for visitors and residents alike.

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains offer endless opportunities for exploration and Denver has some of its own unique attractions such as museums, botanic gardens, and the popular Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre.

California offers its own endless amount of outdoor experiences as well as a wealth of cultural and entertainment attractions in the cities. Los Angeles is one of the entertainment capitals of the world if you’re looking to learn more about the film industry or visit one of the many museums, aquariums, concerts, theme parks, shows, etc.

In California, San Francisco has much better public transportation than Los Angeles, though you definitely still need a car due to how sprawling the state is.

Parking fees also vary widely between the two states. In California, parking can be extremely expensive, especially in major cities. In Colorado, however, parking fees are generally much lower. As a result of these differences, transportation in Colorado and California can be quite different experiences.

Living in Colorado vs. California

What Parts of Colorado vs. California Are Cheaper to Live In

Bakersfield, Fresno, Eureka, and Stockton are all cheap places to live in California. In Bakersfield, the median home price is approximately $300-400,000. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking for an affordable place to call home in the sunshine state.

However, you have to keep in mind that these places are not really near any of the action of cities or beaches, they are located further inland and away from most of the best things to do.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to live in Colorado, you might want to consider one of the state’s smaller towns. Lamar (average home price ~$200,000), Milliken, and La Junta are all relatively affordable places to live. They’re also located in more rural areas of the state and away from Denver.

These towns tend to be more agricultural, and as a result, they’re often cheaper to live in than larger cities. However, it’s important to remember that these towns may not offer the same level of amenities as Denver or other larger cities in Colorado.

Are Salaries Higher in California or Colorado?

Overall, California has higher salaries than Colorado. The average salary in California is $95,000-$150,000 per year, while the average salary in Colorado is $83,000-$92,000 per year.

However, it’s worth noting that the cost of living is also higher in California, so your actual purchasing power may not be as high as you expect.

Education

There are many differences between the educational systems in Colorado and California. California class sizes tend to be slightly bigger than Colorado. Another notable difference is the amount of funding each state provides for education. California generally provides more funding per student than Colorado, which can also impact the quality of education.

However, Colorado is often ranked as one of the top states for education. California has far greater options in terms of higher education with both the UC system and Cal State system as well as private colleges and universities.

Crime Rates

According to U.S. News, California actually ranks higher than Colorado for safety at spots number 36 and 39.
