7. Rollerskate Down the Strand

There is a path (known as “The Strand”) that runs along the ocean starting at Torrance Beach (south of Hermosa Beach) and stretches north for 22 miles, all the way up through Santa Monica. It hits all of LA’s most popular beaches along the way, including Hermosa Beach.

Head to one of the beach rentals along the strand such as Beach Bound Sports to pick up a pair of rollerskates, and enjoy an afternoon of skating along the beach with gorgeous views of the ocean.

8. Get in the Water With a Surf Lesson

Hermosa Beach has a long history with surfing and is a great place to try your hand at the fantastic sport. I’ve been surfing in the South Bay for a few years now, and there’s just nothing like the feeling of catching a wave while watching the LA basin sprawl out in front of you!

It’s a good spot to try and learn because the waves never get too big (typically around 2-3ft is average) and are fairly consistent year-round. The water is warmest in the summer and specifically in September and October, but it’s a lovely refreshing dip all year round!

Surfing can be a tough (but incredibly rewarding and exhilarating) sport, which is why it’s best to start with a lesson from a local expert surfer who can cover basic surf etiquette, tide, and wave dynamics, safety, and surf technique. Surf lessons include the rental of your equipment as well.

Hermosa Beach is very proud of its surf history, and you can often find local beach rats that have been surfing the waves before there was even much of a town built yet. It’s a fantastic place to try one of the BEST outdoor activities.

9. Bike From Hermosa Beach Through Los Angeles

What better way to explore the South Bay and Los Angeles beaches than biking along the strand as far as you can go?

As kids, we used to pack a picnic lunch, rent a bike, and try and see how far down the stand we could get until we had to stop and turn around!

It takes about an hour to bike from Hermosa Beach to Santa Monica (one-way) so it’s definitely doable to see all the sites and get some great exercise in the meantime.

10. Or, Go the Opposite Direction With an Electric Bike Tour From Marina Del Rey

If you’re visiting Hermosa Beach from somewhere in LA, why not ditch the car and start your day in Marina Del Rey and bike in?

The electric bikes make the path feel like a breeze, while still soaking in all the fantastic views. Once you reach Hermosa Beach, you can stop for a bite to eat or a drink and enjoy the beachside restaurants and stores.

11. Start Your Beach Day With Breakfast at Martha’s Cafe

Martha’s Cafe is a beloved breakfast spot in Hermosa Beach, serving up fresh dishes since the 80s. It’s a local favorite, my grandpa would tell stories of how they would eat there every morning after a surf when it was first opened!

The cafe is right off the strand, providing stunning beach views to enjoy with your meal. Martha’s is known for their delicious breakfast and brunch options, as well as their mimosas. If you’re looking for things to do in Hermosa Beach, be sure to swing by Martha’s Cafe for a bite to eat. You won’t be disappointed!

Thinking About Renting a Car?

12. Go Shopping Along Pier Ave.

When visiting Hermosa Beach, be sure to leave some time to explore the pier and all of the great shops it has to offer. There are plenty of options from touristy souvenir stores to clothing and novelty shops.

Pop into some of the more unique stores such as shops selling crystals, unique jewelry, and gifts. You’ll also find great swimwear and clothing at several of the other shops on the pier.

When you need a break from shopping, stop by Gum Tree Cafe for an Australian-inspired cafe and one-of-a-kind home and gift shop. With its scenic location and a great mix of things to do, Hermosa Beach is sure to please everyone in your group!

13. Stop for a Drink at One of the Many Bars Along Hermosa Beach Pier

Hermosa Beach is a great place to spend a day, and one of the best things to do is grab a drink at one of the many bars along the pier. There are plenty of options to choose from, so you can find the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view.

Wander up from the beach after a day of activity or relaxation in the sun for a refreshing drink and bite to eat. Whether you’re looking for a place to watch the sunset or just want to people-watch, there’s a bar that’s perfect for you.

The more popular Farmers Market happens on Wednesdays from 1pm to 6pm on the pier.

An additional, slightly smaller Farmers Market occurs on Fridays from 12pm to 4pm on Valley Drive and 11th Street in Hermosa Beach.

Fun Things to Do in Hermosa Beach at Night

Hermosa Beach is known for its nightlife. There aren’t many other places in the South Bay to dance and find a more rowdy night out, though there are plenty of other great breweries and bars around. For those spending time in the South Bay, Hermosa Beach will be the closest, best night out, unless you make the trek to Long Beach or Los Angeles.

There are still plenty of places for a range of activities at night, from more casual bars to live music and comedy shows or dancing, Hermosa Beach has plenty to do at night.

15. Get a Cocktail + Sing Karaoke at Tower 12

Tower 12 is probably my favorite bar/restaurant in Hermosa Beach. Their food is good but pretty average. However, the real reason this bar is great is the beach theme, casual vibes, and bar seating that overlooks the whole of the pier and out to the ocean.

It feels like the Bungalow of the South Bay and the locals love grabbing a drink here! Plus, Tower 12 is one of the few places I know that puts on karaoke every so often. When their happy hour is on, you can get double-size cocktails and start the night off right!

16. Dance the Night Away at American Junkie

Admittedly, American Junkie can be a bit of a grungy, sweaty night – which is super fun if that’s your jam! But I’ve also seen an older crowd that’s rolled in straight off the beach (with their beach chairs still in hand) having a drink and a great time on the dance floor.

Earlier in the evening will be more casual and the later in the night it gets the crazier the music and dancing will get. For a fun, rowdy night, American Junkie pulls out a giant wheel to spin where you complete a dare and get a shot!

17. Admire the Lights From the Hermosa Beach Pier

If you’re looking for things to do in Hermosa Beach, take a walk along the pier at sunset and into the night and admire the lights. The pier itself is lit up, but it’s even more impressive to view all the lights along the shore.

You can also see the lights from the beach, but walking on the pier gives you a different perspective. There’s something beautiful and eerie about hovering above the ocean water at night as well.

18. Stay at an Oceanfront Hotel

In the South Bay, Hermosa Beach has the only oceanfront hotels. The only hotels that spill directly onto the sand at least (Redondo Beach has some in the harbor, but you can’t get to the beach as easily!).

An oceanfront hotel is the perfect place to stay for travelers who want to be within walking distance of the bars and entertainment on the pier in addition to the ocean.

The Beach House Hotel at Hermosa Beach and Sea Sprite Oceanfront Hotel are both located just steps from the sand, making it the perfect basecamp for a day of sun and fun.

Hermosa Beach, CA

The two hotels are pretty comparable in price (and not as expensive as you might expect for a beachfront hotel in the Los Angeles area) but the Beach House Hotel comes a bit higher rated. The Beach House Hotel has nicer amenities and rooms, though the Sea Sprite is still a great option if you just want the experience of waking up within feet of a California beach!

19. Have a Casual Drink at the Underground Pub

This lesser-known place just off the Hermosa Beach Pier is a favorite local authentic pub. It has a more laid-back atmosphere and is a bit more casual for a drink. I once ran into the Los Angeles Kings hockey team there! So you will likely have quite the local’s experience and a fun night in Hermosa Beach at the Underground.

Best Events in Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is known for hosting some of the best events in the South Bay. Depending on what time of year you choose to visit, you will find especially incredible things to do in Hermosa Beach when there’s an event happening.

20. Fiesta Hermosa

Every year on Labor Day weekend (beginning of September), the whole city comes together with friends and family for one big party – Fiesta!

Originally called Fiesta de las Artes, it’s a celebration of artisan culture. From arts and crafts to food stands serving up fresh tamales (and other favorites), a carnival, and live music throughout downtown Hermosa Beach to dance the day away, this is one of the best events in Hermosa Beach.

21. International Surf Festival

At the beginning of August, all three beach cities in the South Bay come together to host the International Surf Festival. The three signature events are the Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay, the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim, and the Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament.

It can’t get more southern California than this! Thousands of people fill the beach to participate and proudly demonstrate their various beach and ocean skills.

22. 4th of July in Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is undoubtedly one of the best places in SoCal to spend the 4th of July! The beaches and bars are packed and while drinking is not “permitted” on the strand, just about every beachside house is having a party and friendly locals will inevitably invite you up to share a drink in celebration.

Finish the day by watching the Redondo Beach Fireworks from the pier that starts at 9:00 p.m. Then head up to the bars to continue dancing the night away.

23. St. Patricks Day in Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is also one of the best places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The day typically starts with a fantastic parade that includes Iris music, Irish dancing, Irish dogs, and various other local groups.

As a kid, I grew up Irish dancing in the South Bay and attended the parade every year. To this day, the Kelly School of Irish Dance does a fantastic job with its performance.

After the parade, there are various performances (including Irish music and dance) on the pier throughout the day. Or, finish up with a pint of Guinness at Hennessey’s Tavern on the rooftop bar that overlooks the ocean.

24. Hermosa Beach Open Volleyball Tournament

In early July, Hermosa Beach turns into beach volleyball heaven! Come watch the impressive athletes and join the continual party for the weekend warriors and families alike. Beach volleyball is a way of life in the South Bay, and this is a very unique event and thing to do in Hermosa Beach.

25. Pack a Picnic and Watch the Sunset Over the Beach

Hermosa Beach is one of the best places to watch the sunset. As the sun starts to dip below the horizon, the sky turns into beautiful shades of orange and pink. The waves crashing against the shore add soothing background noise. And there’s no better way to enjoy the view than by having a picnic on the beach!

26. Go for a Swim or Paddle in the Ocean

Hermosa Beach is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. One of the most fun, free things to do is to go for a swim or paddle in the ocean.

The water is usually clean and clear, and the waves are fun to ride. As a kid, I spent practically every day in the summer diving under the waves and boogie boarding in the white water – and it’s still so much fun!

If you’re not a strong swimmer, you can still enjoy paddling around in a kayak or SUP or dipping your toes in the water. And if you get tired, you can always relax on the beach and soak up some sun.

27. Take a Walk Down the Strand

You don’t have to rent any equipment to enjoy a walk down the Strand. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, or a vigorous walk or jog. There are plenty of things to see and do along the way. You can people-watch, check out the surfers, or stop at one of the many cafes or shops.

28. Enjoy a Game of Volleyball or Spikeball

If you’re looking for free things to do in Hermosa Beach, playing volleyball or Spikeball on the beach is a great option. Volleyball is a classic beach activity that needs very little equipment to enjoy, and it’s perfect for getting some exercise and spending time with friends.

Spikeball is another great option that’s becoming a popular beach game if you’re looking for something a little more fast-paced. Either way, you’re sure to have a blast while enjoying the beautiful setting.

29. Hermosa Beach Skate Park

The Hermosa Beach Skate Park is located towards the top of Pier Ave and just past Valley Drive. It’s open every day from 12pm to 6pm and is a great free thing to do with your afternoon to bring your skateboard, or just to sit and watch the locals.

30. Exercise or Walk in the Greenbelt (Veteran’s Parkway)

The greenbelt is a lovely walking path full of shrubbery and plants that runs for 3.5 miles from Redondo Beach, through Hermosa Beach, and up to Manhattan Beach. Also known as the Veteran’s Parkway, it’s a great place for a walk when the sun is beating down too hot on the beach.

The stretch that runs through Pier Ave in Hermosa has some outdoor workout equipment in it if you want to take your exercise up a notch.

Which Is Better Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach?

They are very different towns, so it depends on what you are looking for. Both Hermosa and Manhattan Beach have that great, laid-back beach SoCal vibe. However, Manhattan Beach is a bit more upscale, and the restaurant options and shopping certainly reflect that. Head to Manhattan Beach if you want finer dining and smaller, casual but very nice bars.

Hermosa Beach tends to host more and bigger events because of the large pier that is pedestrian-only. Hermosa Beach is also better for nightlife and if you want more of a dive bar and party scene. It’s also a bit more touristy at times because of the draw of events and nightlife, whereas Manhattan Beach has a very strong local feeling to it.

How to Get to Hermosa Beach

It’s easy to get to Hermosa Beach because it’s straight off Pacific Coast Highway (PCH – AKA the 1). Turn down Pier Ave for the majority of the best things to do in Hermosa Beach. From any further away, you will take the 405 freeway and get off on Artesia Blvd.

👉 If you want to rent a car, I recommend and use DiscoverCars while traveling. They compare prices across rental companies to provide you with the BEST deals and LOWEST prices.

❗Make sure to book your car ASAP so there’s availability! (You might have to pick up in Los Angeles)

Parking Tips For Hermosa Beach

Parking can be a bit of a headache in Hermosa Beach during the busy summer months, so it’s best to arrive early for a beach day or take an Uber.

There is plenty of metered parking along Pier Ave and down Hermosa Ave. There are also many public parking lots on the left and right of the pier and a few up along Pier Ave. If you are willing to walk a bit further, it’s much easier to find parking along Valley Drive and back towards PCH.

Weather in Hermosa Beach

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy almost guaranteed sunshine, Hermosa Beach is the place for you. The weather here is almost always sunny, with only very infrequent rain showers in the winter and spring.

The temperature rear round typically varies from 55°F to 75°F and is rarely below 45°F or above 83°F. This makes Hermosa Beach an ideal destination for those who enjoy mild weather year-round and want a beach town with many great things to do.
